Given their distinct characteristics, research went on to investigate the potential for emissions reductions through vehicle class–targeted congestion mitigation by using four freeway lane management scenarios. The next section describes the relevant literature, followed by the emissions-modeling methodology, emissions-modeling results, managed lane analysis framework and results, and finally conclusions.

Evaluating Air Quality Benefits of Freeway High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Lanes in Southern California

In the past decade, a variety of questions have been raised concerning the effectiveness of high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes. In Southern California, HOV lanes evaluation studies have recently been conducted, justifying the effectiveness of HOV lanes in several ways. However, very little research has been performed in evaluating the air quality benefits of HOV lanes. In this paper, a study is...

Evaluation of Alternative Truck Lane Management Strategies along a Section of I - 81

Transportation network improvements are commonly evaluated by estimating average speeds from atransportation/traffic model and converting them into emission estimates using an environmental model such asMOBILE or EMFAC. Unfortunately, recent research has demonstrated that average speed, and perhaps evensimple estimates of the amount of delay and the number of vehicle stops on a ...

Comprehensive Evaluation of Transport Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction Policies

Various transportation policies can help conserve energy and reduce pollution emissions. Some, called cleaner vehicle strategies in this article, reduce emission rates per vehiclekilometer. Others, called mobility management strategies, reduce total vehicle travel. There is disagreement concerning which approach is most cost effective and beneficial overall. Some previous studies concluded that...

Estimation Model of Two-Lane Rural Roads Safety Index According to Characteristics of the Road and Drivers’ Behavior

Vehicle crashes are amongst the major causes of mortality and results in losses of lives and properties. A large number of the vehicle crashes occur on rural roads. Accidents become more noteworthy in two-lane roads due to going and coming traffic. Therefore, prediction of crashes and their causes are considerably important to reduce the number and severity of the accidents. The safety index is...
